主語と動詞の一致は簡単そうに聞こえますし、短い文なら実際に簡単です。間違いが起こるのは、たいてい主語が長いときや、少し変わった主語のときです。

基本ルール #

単数の主語には単数の動詞を、複数の主語には複数の動詞を使います。

  • The dog barks. / The dogs bark.
  • She is ready. / They are ready.

1. 間にある語は無視する #

動詞に一番近い名詞ではなく、本当の主語を見つけましょう。

  • The list of changes is attached.（主語はlist）
  • One of my friends lives in Paris.（主語はone）
  • The quality of the photos was great.

2. each、every、everyone、nobody → 単数 #

  • Each student has a laptop.
  • Everyone is here.
  • Nobody knows the answer.

3. and → 複数、or/nor → 近いほうの主語に合わせる #

  • Anna and Tom are late.
  • Either the manager or the assistants are coming.（assistantsのほうが近い）
  • Neither the assistants nor the manager is coming.（managerのほうが近い）

4. 集合名詞 #

team、family、company、staffなどの単語は、アメリカ英語ではたいてい単数扱いです。

  • The team is winning.
  • Our company has 50 employees.

イギリス英語では、複数の動詞を使うことも一般的です。The team are winning.

5. 「there is」と「there are」 #

主語は動詞の後ろに来るので、先を見て判断しましょう。

  • There is a problem.
  • There are two problems.
