A concordância entre sujeito e verbo parece simples, e em frases curtas ela é mesmo. Os erros costumam aparecer quando o sujeito é longo ou incomum.

A regra básica #

Um sujeito no singular pede um verbo no singular; um sujeito no plural pede um verbo no plural.

  • The dog barks. / The dogs bark.
  • She is ready. / They are ready.

1. Ignore as palavras no meio #

Encontre o sujeito de verdade, não o substantivo mais próximo do verbo.

  • The list of changes is attached. (o sujeito é list)
  • One of my friends lives in Paris. (o sujeito é one)
  • The quality of the photos was great.

2. Each, every, everyone, nobody → singular #

  • Each student has a laptop.
  • Everyone is here.
  • Nobody knows the answer.

3. And → plural, or/nor → sujeito mais próximo #

  • Anna and Tom are late.
  • Either the manager or the assistants are coming. (assistants é o mais próximo)
  • Neither the assistants nor the manager is coming. (manager é o mais próximo)

4. Substantivos coletivos #

Palavras como team, family, company e staff geralmente ficam no singular no inglês americano.

  • The team is winning.
  • Our company has 50 employees.

No inglês britânico, o verbo no plural também é comum: The team are winning.

5. "There is" ou "there are" #

O sujeito vem depois do verbo, então olhe adiante.

  • There is a problem.
  • There are two problems.
