In inglese l'apostrofo ha solo due funzioni: indica il possesso e segnala le lettere mancanti. Quasi tutti gli errori nascono dall'usarlo per una terza funzione: formare i plurali.
Funzione 1: il possesso #
Sostantivo singolare: aggiungi 's.
- the dog's bowl (un solo cane)
- my boss's email
- James's car (è accettato anche James')
Sostantivo plurale che finisce in s: aggiungi solo '.
- the dogs' bowls (più di un cane)
- the students' grades
Sostantivo plurale che non finisce in s: aggiungi 's.
- the children's toys
- the women's team
Funzione 2: le contrazioni #
L'apostrofo sostituisce le lettere mancanti.
- don't = do not
- it's = it is / it has
- you're = you are
- '90s = 1990s
Mai l'apostrofo nei plurali #
È l'errore più comune con l'apostrofo.
| Sbagliato | Corretto |
|---|---|
| apples for sale | |
| two |
two iPhones |
| the |
the 1990s |
I pronomi possessivi non vogliono l'apostrofo #
His, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs e whose non prendono mai l'apostrofo.
- The app updated its icon. (non it's)
- Is this yours? (non your's)
Vedi anche: its o it's e whose o who's.
Una checklist veloce #
- È una contrazione? → apostrofo dove mancano le lettere.
- Qualcosa appartiene a qualcuno? → 's (singolare) o s' (plurale che finisce in s).
- Indica solo più di una cosa? → nessun apostrofo.
