Many people were taught that me sounds rude, so they say John and I everywhere, even where it's wrong. One quick test solves it.
The short answer #
- I is a subject: it does the action. I called Anna.
- Me is an object: it receives the action or follows a preposition. Anna called me.
The drop-the-other-person test #
Remove the other person and see which word sounds right on its own.
John and ___ went to the meeting. → I went ✓ → John and I went to the meeting.
The manager thanked John and ___. → thanked me ✓ → The manager thanked John and me.
This is between you and ___. → between me ✓ → between you and me.
"Between you and I" is always wrong #
After a preposition (between, with, for, to, from), use me:
- between you and me
- for Sarah and me
- with my team and me
Where "myself" goes wrong #
Myself is only correct when I is also the subject of the sentence, or for emphasis.
- ✓ I made it myself.
- ✓ I taught myself to code.
- ✗
Please contact John or myself.→ Please contact John or me.
Politeness tip #
It's traditional to put yourself last: Anna and I, Anna and me, not I and Anna.
