垂悬修饰语（dangling modifier）这种语法错误，常常会让句子变得意外地好笑。一旦学会识别，改起来其实很容易。

什么是垂悬修饰语？ #

修饰语是用来描述某样东西的词或短语。如果它要描述的对象根本不在句子里，它就会“悬空”，结果被挂到了错误的词上。

Walking to work, the rain started.

是谁在走路？当然不是雨。句子根本没说是谁在走路，于是 walking to work 就被安到了 the rain 头上，变成了“雨走路去上班”。

规则 #

句首的短语描述的是紧跟在逗号后面的主语。

Walking to work, I got caught in the rain. ✓

两种改正方法 #

1. 在逗号后面放上正确的主语。

After reading the report, the answer was clear. After reading the report, I knew the answer.

2. 把短语改成完整的从句。

While cooking dinner, the phone rang. While I was cooking dinner, the phone rang.

错位修饰语 #

错位修饰语（misplaced modifier）虽然在句子里，但位置放错了。

I only ate two cookies.（意思是：我对这两块饼干只做了“吃”这一件事） I ate only two cookies.（意思是：我只吃了两块，没有更多）

She served sandwiches to the guests on paper plates. She served the guests sandwiches on paper plates.

第二个错误句读起来像是“客人坐在纸盘上”。修饰语要紧挨着它所描述的词。
